Smartphones are expected to get more popular

Smartphones will account for nearly a quarter of all new handsets sold each year by 2013, a report has suggested.

Juniper Research said the popularity of the latest phones with multimedia capabilities will increase and take up 23 per cent of the market in the next four years.

It based this prediction partly on the success of the Apple iPhone, with which users can download different applications and use them to enhance the features of the device.

"Very soon, the majority of new phones will be smartphones," said Andrew Kitson, the author of the report. "The rate at which mobile handsets evolve into personalised internet-centric mobile computers [will] gather momentum."

The publication forecast smartphone sales to reach 300 million by 2013.

For those who want to upgrade, they could consider recycling their mobile phone in returm for money, which they can then put towards the cost of the new gadget.
