Recycling and cutting carbon emissions are now the responsibility of everyone, according to one expert.
Friends of the Earth, a charitable organisation which campaigns on a number of environmental issues, said that adopting renewable energy sources was just one of the ways the UK could emerge as a green world leader.
A spokeswoman for the group said that renewables were the cleaner option and would address a serious need to reduce carbon emissions as drastically as possible.
"We're now committed to do that under the Climate Change Act, which became law at the end of November. It's the first of its kind in the world so we need to demonstrate that we really are a world-leading country," she said.
The spokeswoman added that there were also opportunities to be had by being greener and that it had proven to be a robust industry in other countries such as Germany.
Consumers looking to make their own contribution to protecting the earth could consider recycling used mobile phones, so that they are not sent to landfill.
