Orange social option 'could have copycats'

The system brings together sites like Facebook

Having announced the new Social Life site this week, one blogger has highlighted why Orange might have a success on its hands.

In an article for the CCS Insight page, Paolo Pescatore said the operator has created a service that will allow users to collate all of their networking accounts in one place - and this is something that may be copied by others.

Accessible via Orange World, he added there were already rumours that Vodafone was planning a "massive overhaul" of its Live! offering, with firms like Sony Ericsson also likely to get involved with such services.

One of the reasons Mr Pescatore explained this would be valuable to them is the potential for greater traffic and more advertising opportunities.

"More importantly," he concluded, "it may help to retain subscribers as social networking continues to spread in 2009 and beyond."

Orange Social Life was unveiled this week and allows people to link sites like Facebook and MySpace on a single mobile web page.
