Tesco handset may offer good-value upgrade for old mobile phones

One of Tesco's best selling mobile handsets in the two weeks leading up to Christmas, shifting over 10,000 units, was available to consumers for just £18.99.

The VX1i Party Phone is the same size as a credit card and the company states that it remains one of its most popular gadgets, reports MobileNews.

Consumers could be tempted by the SIM-free handset - which is unlocked to work with any SIM excluding those on the 3 network - as a more convenient alternative to their old mobile phone.

Tesco Telecoms chief executive officer Lance Batchelor said: "Our handset was developed as an affordable replacement, temporary phone or alternative to a more expensive phone, but its popularity really has taken us by surprise."

He added that the smartphone is the perfect handset for partygoers all year round and that the start of the new year is "the perfect time to cut costs".

Tesco mobile also sells the Apple iPhone 3G, which could tempt consumers to sell their current mobile.
