Look and feel

The incredibly slim aluminium chassis of the new iPad 2 evokes a futuristic, stylish feel, with a display that benefits from improved clarity and brightness thanks to the new graphics processors.

Ease of use

Apple's unfussy iOS 4.3 proves simple to use and intuitive for the user. With an incredibly tactile touch display and virtual keyboard, tasks such as emailing, gaming and web surfing are a joy.

Features

The new dual-core chip offers speedy multitasking, plus the iPad 2 benefits from a pair of snappers designed for video calling or for taking somewhat blurry images. HD video is on offer from the rear camera, too.

Performance

Fast, intuitive and smooth – gaming, email and web tasks run slickly. The new media generation have a new must-have device, but we’re surprised there is still no Flash video.

Battery life

The long battery life was a pleasant surprise – even with the boost in power and that slim chassis, you’re looking at a good 10 hours from a full battery charge – the same as the original. If you don’t have it working all day, you’re likely to get two days before having to charge again.

Pros:
Very sleek and stylish, loads of iPad apps, particularly for new media and magazines, video calling abilities.
Cons:
The lack of Flash video is a glaring omission; iTunes software is past its sell-by date and it’s difficult to transfer data without iTunes.
Rating:
  • Look and Feel 5 Stars
  • Ease of use 4 Stars
  • Features 4 Stars
  • Performance 5 Stars
  • Battery life 5 Stars

Final verdict: 4 Stars

Whizzier and more streamlined than the original, the iPad 2 is an incredibly sleek device for the new media generation – but it suffers from the lack of Flash video, and that dated iTunes software.
