Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 3 Stars
Look and feel
This is a big phone, because of the slide-out gaming pad that is its unique feature. A better display would have been nice.
Ease of use
The operating system has been skinned by Sony Ericsson but whether you’re used to Google’s operating system – or are a new user – you’ll not find it an issue.
There are loads of games to choose from, along with dedicated video game controls, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, a five-megapixel camera and a 1GHz processor all running on Android Gingerbread.
There’s plenty to keep gamers entertained, although there are some graphics issues. Elsewhere it offers what you’d be expecting from a smartphone.
You’ll need to take your charger with you, especially if you play a lot of games – battery life offers 413 minutes on standby and a talktime of 385 minutes.
- The closest gaming experience to a Sony PSP or Nintendo DS Lite that you’ll find on a smartphone, with that slide-out gaming pad.
- There are several platforms for downloading games, which can make the experience somewhat confusing.
- Look and Feel 3 Stars
- Ease of use 3 Stars
- Features 4 Stars
- Performance 4 Stars
- Battery life 3 Stars
Final verdict: 3 Stars
This smartphone offers lots of features and plenty of entertainment for gamers. It won’t replace a dedicated gaming gadget though.
