Government 'needs to deliver on green promises'

Following the prime minister's announcement regarding further funding to fight climate change, one environmental expert has called for further commitment.

Gordon Brown unveiled plans for a £60 million package designed to aid developing countries reduce carbon emissions and tackle deforestation, but a spokesman for the Green Alliance has noted words are not enough.

Stephen Hale, director of the independent eco-organisation, said although the Labour leader is targeting the "issue that matters", he will be judged only on whether he lives up to his promises.

"[The announcement] could be the first big step towards a global agreement," he explained, adding: "That will only happen if he works with others to develop and improve his proposals. The prime minister must go further - and quickly."

According to a press release from the Department of Energy and Climate Change put out on June 26th, upcoming climate negotiations in Copenhagen must be "ambitious, effective [and] fair."
