Why Did the Flip Phone Make a Return?

Why Did the Flip Phone Make a Return?

Back in the early 2010s, the iPhone dominated the smartphone world while the classic flip phone quietly disappeared into history. Fast forward to today, and flip phones have made a huge comeback — not as basic devices, but as modern folding smartphones packed with premium features. So how did the flip phone go from retro relic to cutting-edge tech once again?

For a closer comparison of device styles, take a look at our Flip Phone vs Standard Phone guide.

When Did the New Flip Phone Arrive?

Instead of focusing on the original 2000s flip phones, let’s look at their modern rebirth. The first glimpse of a next-generation flip smartphone appeared in February 2019 at Mobile World Congress, when Samsung showcased an early folding screen prototype. It was the first time in years anyone had seen a flip-style device enter the mainstream smartphone conversation again.

Samsung’s first official consumer model — the Galaxy Z Flip — launched in February 2020. Early reactions were mixed, with many users questioning hinge durability, weather resistance and long-term reliability. But once people got their hands on the device, it quickly earned praise for its innovative design, portability and surprising practicality.

The success of the Z Flip led Samsung to introduce an entirely new product family: the Galaxy Z Series, dedicated exclusively to folding devices.

Why Did the Modern Flip Phone Become So Popular?

Following the success of the first Z Flip, Samsung expanded the line quickly — with the Z Flip 6 launching in 2024 and rumours of a Z Flip 7 arriving in 2025. Alongside the Flip, Samsung also launched the Z Fold series, which folds horizontally like a mini tablet. Both ranges have grown rapidly, attracting users who want something different from the traditional slate smartphone.

Samsung wasn’t alone either. Major brands like Google, Huawei and OnePlus entered the folding market, with Huawei even unveiling an ambitious tri-fold smartphone.

Interestingly, Apple remains the only major brand yet to release a flip-style iPhone — though industry leaks suggest a foldable prototype is being worked on behind the scenes. If Apple eventually enters the category, it could become one of the biggest design shifts in smartphone history.

Why Are People Going Back to Flip Phones?

The flip phone comeback isn’t just about technology — it taps into emotion, practicality and the changing way we use smartphones. Here are the biggest reasons behind its rise:

1. Nostalgia With a Modern Twist

For many people, flip phones bring back memories of the 2000s — but with modern versions offering flagship performance, high-quality cameras and full smartphone functionality. You get the charm of the past with the power of today.

2. Compact and Practical

Foldable phones offer the best of both worlds: a full-sized screen when opened, and a compact, pocketable design when closed. The folded shape also provides natural screen protection if you drop it.

3. Perfect for Photography

The hinge is a game-changer. You can prop your phone halfway open for hands-free selfies, group shots and video calls. No tripod needed — just flip, angle and snap.
