Facts about the troop
Gorillas are the largest primates on Earth, weighing up to 200kg, yet they share 98.4% of their DNA with us.
All four gorilla subspecies are critically endangered. Western lowland gorillas are in decline across central and western Africa.
They face poaching, disease, deforestation and climate change, and mining for the minerals inside our tech destroys their rainforest home.
London Zoo's Gorilla Kingdom is home to a troop of western lowland gorillas: silverback Kiburi, females Effie and Mjukuu, and youngsters including babies Venus and Juno.
Every phone, tablet and laptop contains minerals like cobalt, coltan, tungsten and gold. Digging them out of the ground clears and pollutes the central-African rainforests that gorillas call home.
When you sell or recycle your old tech, those minerals are recovered and reused, so less needs to be freshly mined. Less mining means more forest left standing for gorillas and the wildlife they share it with.
Reduce the need for newly mined minerals. Take care of your tech:
Hold on to your tech and look after it. The longer a device lasts, the fewer new minerals we need to mine.
When you're done, recycle your old device so its cobalt, gold and copper are recovered, not landfilled.
Choosing a refurbished device keeps minerals in circulation and cuts demand for newly mined ones.
Turn your tech into cash with Envirofone and ZSL.
