Who actually buys your phone?
It sounds like a small distinction. It decides who is accountable if anything goes wrong.
Through a comparison site
Two companies, one of them a stranger
- The site lists prices from a panel of buyers and earns a commission when you sell.
- The buyer is a separate company: the name on the quote, not the site you searched on.
- That third party is who receives your device, inspects it, holds your data and pays you.
- If something goes wrong, the site's position is usually that the deal was between you and them.

- We publish the price ourselves. There is no commission in it, because there is no one to pay.
- We are the buyer. Your device comes to us and is tested by us.
- We pay you, from the same company whose name was on the quote.

The headline price is not the price
A quote is a proposal. The only figure that counts is the one that reaches your account, and the bigger headline does not always win.

We will not always top a table sorted by headline price, and we have stopped trying to. The number we show you is the number we have to pay, so it has to be one we can stand behind after the device is in our hands.
Four questions worth asking anyone who wants your phone
Including us. Ask them of anyone before you post a device, and the answers will tell you most of what you need to know. Here are ours.
Who is the legal buyer, and how long have they traded?
The name at the top of a quote is not always the company that ends up with your phone. A high price is easy to publish on day one. A trading history is not.
Our answer
Envirofone. We buy your device ourselves rather than introducing you to someone who will, and we have been doing it since 2005. Over £160 million paid out so far.
What happens if the price changes after inspection?
Most buyers re-check a device on arrival, and that is reasonable. What matters is whether a revised figure is a proposal you can turn down, or a decision already taken, and how long you get to decide.

If your device does not match the condition you picked, we email you a revised offer. You get three days to decide, and nothing is processed until you agree to it.
Does saying no cost you anything?
This is the one to check. If turning down a revised offer means paying to get your own property back, then turning it down is not really a choice, and the revised figure is not really an offer.

No. Decline the revised offer and we send your device straight back to you, completely free of charge.
If it goes wrong, who is responsible?
Worth knowing before you post anything, not after. Where a sale is arranged by one company and completed by another, responsibility can sit in the gap between them.

We are. The same company quoted you, tested your device and paid you, so there is no third party for us to refer you to.
The obvious questions
Because a listing is not free. Comparison sites earn a commission on every trade-in they send out, and that money has to come from somewhere: it comes out of the price the buyer can afford to offer you. Staying off them means we can put that money into the quote instead.
No, and we would not. Plenty of reputable buyers list on them, and the sites are generally upfront that they introduce buyers rather than being the buyer. Our point is narrower than that. An introducer takes a commission and does not handle your device, so the price is lower than it needs to be and responsibility is split between two companies. We would rather keep both in one place.
It might be. A quote is a proposal though, and the only number that counts is the one that reaches your account. Before you compare two figures, it is worth checking what each buyer does if the price changes on inspection and what it costs you to walk away. Ours: three days to decide, and nothing to pay if you say no.
