About Oakwood Dog Rescue
Oakwood Dog Rescue is a dog rescue in Hull, East Yorkshire. Gill Williams started it in 2009 alongside her dog training business, after taking in a dog a client could no longer keep. A visit to a kill shelter in Romania changed the direction of the rescue, and we now take in ex-street dogs from Romania, Cyprus, Greece and Bosnia, as well as dogs from the UK.
Our motto is One Home Only. We do not try to rehome dogs as fast as possible. We assess every dog's behaviour and match them to the right home, so that the home they go to is the last one they need. Every dog leaves us neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped and treated for parasites, and adopters get five weeks of free insurance, a rehoming advice pack, and our support for the rest of that dog's life.
The kennels cost around £15,000 a month to run and we receive no government funding, so everything comes from public generosity. We also run The Dog Hub at Oakwood Dog Rescue, with structured play sessions, a second-hand dog shop and a dog-friendly cafe, plus charity shops in Hull and Cottingham.
Right now we are raising money for vet care for the dogs in our care.
