Sell it instead. Postage is free either way - a Royal Mail QR code at the Post Office counter or a collection from your door - and you get paid the day it lands and passes inspection. It still gets reused at the end of its life, exactly as it would have done through recycling.

“Recycled” covers everything from a device given a second life to a device shredded for its metals. Here is which one yours gets, and in what order we try.
Every device that reaches us is booked in against the day it landed, so there is a record of it from the moment it is out of the envelope.
Data destruction happens as part of processing, before the device goes anywhere else. Nothing personal survives to a second owner or to a recycling partner.
If the device can work again it is tested, refurbished and resold - the best outcome there is for it. If it cannot, the parts that still work come out to repair something else.
What is left is sent for materials recovery so the metals and components are used again. Nothing we take in goes to landfill.
Your data
We wipe it. Do these four things anyway
Data destruction is part of how every device is processed, so you are not relying on your own factory reset. But a device still signed in to an iCloud or Google account arrives locked to you, which stops it being reused - and a reset on its own does not clear that.
- Take the SIM card and any memory card out - we cannot return them
- Sign out of iCloud, or remove your Google account
- Turn off Find My iPhone or Android activation lock, so the device is not locked to you
- Factory reset it, then check it boots to the setup screen
Sending it in
There is no prepaid label for a recycling send, so this is a normal trip to the Post Office. Pay for the postage that suits you - it does not need to be tracked, and there is nothing to insure.
- Wipe it and sign out, using the four steps above.
- Power it off with the battery inside, and wrap it so it cannot switch itself on in transit.
- Write “Please Recycle” clearly on the outside, so it is not booked in as a trade-in.
- Post it to the address below, paying the postage at the counter.

Yes. Condition does not matter for recycling - cracked screens, dead batteries, water damage and devices that will not power on are all accepted. If the battery is visibly swollen or damaged, pack it carefully and make sure the device cannot switch on in transit.
Yes - tablets, smartwatches, laptops, MacBooks, games consoles and controllers as well. As with phones, it is worth checking the trade-in value first: most of these hold their value better than a phone of the same age.
