Mobile phones have become an essential part of modern life, but their production requires the use of precious materials, some of which have significant environmental and social impacts. We want to shed light on the unethical and unsustainable practices associated with the sourcing of these materials and explain why it is crucial to promote sustainable and ethical practices in the mobile phone industry.
Cobalt is one of the critical materials used in the production of mobile phones, and over half of the world's cobalt comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where child labour is prevalent, and the mining process has been linked to severe health problems for workers. The mining of cobalt has also been associated with environmental destruction, including deforestation and soil erosion.
