iPhone Battery Health: Signs It’s Time for an Upgrade

A new year is the perfect time to check whether your phone is still keeping up with your daily routine — and battery health is one of the biggest indicators of how well your device is ageing. You might not have a cracked screen or damaged camera, but if your battery is struggling, it can completely derail your day. Whether you’re trying to get home, follow maps, take photos or just stay connected, poor battery performance can cause real headaches.

In this guide, we’ll break down the common signs that your battery is on its last legs, so you’ll know exactly when to consider upgrading. If you're also wondering how much your current tech is worth, our value estimation guide is a handy read.

Why Does My Phone Die So Easily?

Modern smartphones should be able to last hours — if not a full day — on a single charge. For example:

  • iPhone 15: Up to 50 hours (DXOMARK estimate)
  • iPhone 14: Around 10 hours
  • Samsung Galaxy S24: Around 13 hours
  • Google Pixel 9: Around 13 hours

If your phone drops to low battery after an hour or two, that’s a strong sign the battery health has degraded. Keep in mind that usage style also plays a huge role. Someone who mainly calls and texts may get 12 hours easily, whereas someone who edits photos or uses GPS heavily might only get five.

Why Do My Apps Take So Long to Load?

If apps are suddenly slow to open or freeze during use, your battery (or overall device performance) may be struggling. As batteries age, phones work harder to perform simple tasks, causing:

  • slower load times
  • lagging animations
  • random app crashes

If your phone feels noticeably sluggish, battery wear may be contributing to the problem.

What Is Battery Capacity?

Battery capacity refers to the maximum charge your battery can hold compared to when it was new. This is not the same as the percentage shown at the top of your screen — that will always go up to 100%. Instead, you can check battery capacity directly in Settings:

Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging

As your phone ages, this percentage drops. A healthy battery is usually above 85%. Once you dip into the low 80s — or worse — your phone will drain significantly faster, and it’s a clear sign that an upgrade is worth considering.

Why Does My Phone Overheat?

A damaged or ageing battery no longer regulates temperature effectively, which can cause your phone to overheat. However, overheating can also be triggered by:

  • using your phone in direct sunlight
  • charging with no ventilation
  • running too many apps at once

Overheating combined with poor battery life is often a sign the battery is failing. If overheating is the only issue, it may be environmental rather than a hardware fault.

Why Is My Phone Charging So Slowly?

Slow charging can happen when the battery is struggling to accept power — a common symptom of battery degradation. But before blaming the phone, check the simple things:

  • Is your cable frayed?
  • Is the charging brick faulty?
  • Are you using an uncertified charger?

If you’ve ruled out cable issues, the battery is likely the culprit.
