Most of us have one. A drawer with an old phone in it, maybe a tablet that nobody has touched since the kids got their own, and a tangle of chargers that fit none of them. It all still has some value, but selling it privately is a hassle that rarely feels worth the effort.
The quick verdict
Envirofone and Richer Sounds have teamed up so you can trade in your old phone or tablet at a participating Richer Sounds store and have its value taken straight off your purchase. A colleague runs a few quick checks and a one-minute guided test, you get a valuation, and there's no obligation if you'd rather keep your device.

So we've done something about it. Envirofone has teamed up with Richer Sounds, one of the UK's best loved specialist hi-fi and home cinema retailers, to launch an in-store trade-in service. You bring in your old phone or tablet, we value it, and the money comes straight off whatever you're buying at Richer Sounds that day.
Here's how it works, why we're doing it, and what you need to know before you pop in.
What the Partnership Actually Means for You
Put simply, your old tech now counts towards your next purchase. Upgrading your TV, finally getting that soundbar, treating yourself to a decent pair of headphones or a new turntable: whatever you're after at Richer Sounds, you can now knock some money off it with a device you no longer use.
There's no listing it online, no meeting strangers in car parks and no haggling. You get a valuation in store, and if you're happy with it, the agreed amount goes towards your purchase there and then.
How Trading In at Richer Sounds Works
The service is powered by Envirofone, so the valuation behind it is the same one we've built up over years of buying, testing and refurbishing phones and tablets. In store, it looks like this:
- Bring your device in. Take your old phone or tablet into a participating Richer Sounds store, ideally charged.
- Quick checks. A Richer Sounds colleague asks a few simple questions about its condition, such as whether it switches on and whether there's any damage.
- A short guided test. You'll scan a QR code and run a quick guided check on the device. It takes about a minute and confirms the exact model and that everything works as it should.
- Get your valuation. Once the check is done, you'll see what your device is worth.
- Put it towards your purchase. If you're happy, the trade-in value comes off what you're buying. If not, there's no obligation and you keep your device.
After that, your old device comes to us at Envirofone, where it's re-tested and, wherever possible, refurbished and given a second life.
See It in Action
We popped down to Richer Sounds to show you what it looks like in store. It's a quick watch:
Why We're Doing This
There are millions of unused phones and tablets sitting in homes across the UK. Every one of them is worth something, either to someone who'd happily use a refurbished device or as parts and materials that can be recovered properly. Left in a drawer, they're worth nothing to anyone.
What usually stops people is the faff. Selling privately takes time, and posting a device off can feel like one more job on the list. Putting trade-in right at the till, in a shop you were already visiting, takes most of that away.
It also fits how Richer Sounds does things. They've been around since 1978 and have built a reputation for looking after their customers, which is exactly the kind of partner we wanted for this.
As I said when we announced it: "Upgrading your technology shouldn't mean leaving your old devices gathering dust. By giving customers a simple way to turn unwanted tech into money off their next purchase, we're making technology more affordable while helping to keep perfectly good devices in use for longer."
Phil Marrow, Deputy Operations Director at Richer Sounds, put it this way: "Working with Envirofone means we can offer customers a convenient way to trade in unwanted technology and put that value towards something they'll really enjoy. It's a great addition to our customer offering and an important step towards encouraging more sustainable purchasing decisions."
What Happens to Your Old Device
Once a device has been traded in, it's sent to Envirofone. We check it again on arrival, wipe it, and refurbish it where we can so it can go on to be used by someone else. Devices that can't be refurbished are recycled responsibly, with useful parts and materials recovered.
It's the same process behind the refurbished phones and tablets we sell, so your old device has a real chance of ending up in someone else's pocket rather than in landfill.
Getting Your Device Ready Before You Go
A few minutes of prep at home makes the whole thing quicker in store and keeps your personal data safe:
Back up what you want to keep
Make sure your photos, contacts, messages and anything else important are saved to the cloud or to another device.
Sign out of your accounts
On an iPhone or iPad, sign out of your Apple Account and turn off Find My. On Android, remove your Google account. If a device is still locked to your account, it can't be traded in.
Charge it up
The guided check needs the device switched on, so bring it with some battery left.
Take out your SIM and memory card
Pop out your SIM card, and any memory card if your device has one, before you hand it over.
If you'd like more detail, our guide to how selling your device works covers the steps in full.
Prefer to Sell Online Instead?
If there isn't a Richer Sounds near you, or you'd rather have the money paid to you directly, you can still sell your phone or tablet online with Envirofone. You'll get an instant quote, free tracked postage and payment on the same day your device passes inspection.
Ready to Trade In?
Next time you're heading to Richer Sounds, dig out that old phone or tablet and take it with you. It could take a nice chunk off your new TV, speakers or headphones, and your old device gets to be useful again instead of sitting in a drawer.
We're really pleased to be working with the team at Richer Sounds on this, and we can't wait to see what people put their old tech towards.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Richer Sounds and Envirofone trade-in work?
Take your old phone or tablet into a participating Richer Sounds store. A colleague runs a few quick checks and a short guided test, you get a valuation, and if you're happy the value comes off what you're buying.
What can I trade in at Richer Sounds?
The service is for phones and tablets. Your device needs to switch on so it can be checked, and the valuation will depend on its model, storage and condition.
Do I get cash for my trade-in?
No. In store, the trade-in value is taken off your Richer Sounds purchase. If you'd rather have the money paid to you, you can sell your device online with Envirofone instead and get paid by bank transfer.
Do I have to accept the valuation?
No. Getting a valuation doesn't commit you to anything. If you're not happy with the offer, you simply keep your device.
What should I do before trading in my phone or tablet?
Back up your photos and files, sign out of your Apple or Google account and turn off Find My, charge the device, and remove your SIM card and any memory card.
What happens to my old device after I trade it in?
It's sent to Envirofone, where it's checked again, wiped and refurbished wherever possible so someone else can use it. Devices that can't be refurbished are recycled responsibly.
