Best Smartphone Apps To Help Improve Your Mental Health

Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 runs from May 13th – May 19th, 2024, and aims to shed light on improving mental health and building better futures where mental health is handled right. It is an annual campaign each year with its own specific theme, this year the theme is Movement.

We have decided to put together a list of the best ways to improve your mental health, plus the smartphone apps we recommend for each solution. We have plenty to get through so let’s get straight into it.

Relaxation - When we relax, our mind and bodies are also able to relax. When we relax our minds don’t have anything to concentrate on or think about, meaning we are reducing our stress levels and keeping our minds healthy. Relaxation can improve focus and our mood whilst also lowering blood pressure and improving digestion, so overall our entire body gets a benefit! Some great examples of relaxing include breathing excersises, guided meditation and the use of mindfulness apps.

What is the best stress management app?

  • Recolor
  • I Love Hue
  • Headspace
  • Insight Timer
  • Glo

Fitness and Physical Health - Fitness is a great way to improve mental health, exercise releases endorphins and serotonin into the body which helps to improve our mood and mental state. As well as this, exercise allows you to connect with the outdoors, interact with other people and take on exciting new challenges.

What is the best fitness app to use?

  • Strava
  • My Fitness Pal
  • Nike Training Club
  • Sweat
  • Evolve You

Sleeping - Possibly the most important factor on our list is sleep. Sleeping majorly improves our mental health, without sleep the brain struggles to function properly in day to day life, leaving us with an overthinking, overworking mind. When we sleep, our mind sleeps too allowing the brain and the rest of your body to relax for the next day. A good nights sleep will also mean you will wake up in a better mood, so you won’t feel as down.

What is the best free app to track sleep?

  • Sleep Reset
  • Noisli
  • Sleep Score
  • Sleep Cycle
  • Shut Eye

Learning New Skills - A good way to keep our mental health strong is by keeping our minds active and distracted. Learning new skills is brilliant for boosting confidence and self-esteem, plus it just feels rewarding to learn a new skill. Remember, ‘learning a new skill’ doesn’t need to be a major, overwhelming skill, it can be a simple new task like learning to cook, sing, play an instrument or learn a new language.

What is the number 1 learning app?

  • Duolingo
  • Tasty
  • Simply Piano
  • Babbel
  • Grasshopper

Meeting new friends/ talking to friends - And finally, our last suggestion on how to improve your mental health is by talking to others and opening up. When you talk to the people in your life you love, it can easily put you in a better mood, whether that’s for a catch up or to talk about something that’s really concerning you, talking can be a great way to get stress off your shoulders. Remember, you don’t just need to talk to old friends, making new friends is a great option too. And we have plenty of apps that are ideal for finding new friends.

Is there an app to make new friends?

  • Telegram
  • Discord
  • Bumble For Friends
  • Friender
  • Yubo

Like we mentioned, each year Mental Health Awareness Week has a theme and this years is Movement, keeping ourselves and our mind active to improve our wellbeing.
